Berakah Gesture three

Berakah Gesture three

This is a gesture of embracing our own brokenness in life as Jesus did in obedience to the Father’s will. Here we break the gifts we have received – our time, our talents, our possessions, our lives, by accepting our brokenness. We should not forget that it was in very painful circumstances that Jesus gave thanks. St Paul tells us: “The Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it…”(1Cor. 11:23-24).

The gospels show us that Jesus had understood that he was betrayed by one of his apostles. He announced it: “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me”(Mt 26: 21). The series of events that would lead to his condemnation and cruel death had already been set in motion. Jesus knew it. Nevertheless, he gave thanks, that is to say, he opened himself with gratitude to the outpouring of love that comes from the Father who is always trustworthy and reliable (Hesed and Emet).
